Posture is an important component of overall musculoskeletal health. So many of us spend hours each day seated at a desk compromising optimal positioning and increasing strain on our neck, shoulders, back, hips, etc.
In an ideal world, our ears are stacked over the top of our shoulders, shoulders over trunk, hips flexed to 90 degrees, feet flat on the floor. One great tool to help with upright posture is lying on a foam roller in a vertical position. This allows for our anterior musculature to gently stretch and length to counteract the prolonged forward positioning. It also allows for our midback to maintain a more neutral alignment instead of rounded.
Keep these few tips in mind:
- Start by ensuring both head and pelvis are supported on the foam roll
- Keep knees bent with feet flat on the floor for balance and to avoid excessive pressure on lumbar spine
- If there’s too much strain on your chest, stretch one arm at a time instead of doing both sides simultaneously
